Do-It-Yourselfers rejoice! A recent development in the security field is the capability to re-key a lock cylinder to a new combination without having to disassemble it, made possible by the development of a re-codeable lock system by Strattec for Master Lock.

Master Lock has gone further than merely providing a re-codeable feature such as a hardened pin in the bolt to deter sawing, an outer collar that spins to prevent the use of a wrench, a top and bottom shield to protect against efforts of bypassing the bolt unit with the use of an ice pick, utilizing the admired KW1 keyway also provides re-keying into numerous lock systems currently in effect. The Master Lock Reykeyable Deadbolt is designed to use depth increments of .023 and depth number values of one to six.

Security for locking requires a sidebar and there is also a spring loaded locking detent at the end of the cylinder plug which keeps the plug in a locked position. The detent prevents a person from attempting the use of a key that is only partially inserted to gain entry or for efforts at picking the lock, and the detent also prevents the plugs ability to turn unless a key is completely placed in and inserted.

In order to start the process a change tool along with an operating key need to be on hand. Insert the key rotating the plug ninety degrees clockwise. Place in the change tool into the access hole, which should be in the twelve o'clock position, and push in to the interior of the deadbolt.

Upon completion of this first step a spring action will be noticeable as the change tool is completely seated which lifts the rack outward, away from the moveable blocks separating them from the rack but still linked to the lock tumblers.

Do away with the former operating key and place in a new key with a new combination. After inserting the new key the tumblers and blocks will be moved into the new key combination.

Follow this by removing the change tool and a spring in the housing forces the rack inside to the blocks keeping them held in their new arrangement.

Lastly, turn the key to the vertical position counter clockwise. This will make the V notches in the tumblers press into the projections on the blocks moving the sidebar out and in a locked position and any old keys will be unable to be used.
